Every year in July, people around the globe gather to celebrate World Listening Day. This year the Tokyo Phonographers Union presents World Listening Day 2016 in Kyosumi Shirakawa, Tokyo on the theme of Lost and Found. To date, The Tokyo Phonographers Union has held the event at Shibuya 20202 Gallery, Zenpukuji Park/Youkobo Art Space, Setagaya Monozukuri School, Sakura WORKS Kannai, The Forum Setagaya and Art Baboo in Yokohama Chinatown. Now in its 7th year, the event will be held in and around Kiyosumi Shirakawa and the KS Loft House.
One pays little attention to the existence of sound in our daily lives yet we are being continuously surrounded and influenced by it. We encourage you to take this opportunity to open your ears and rediscover the sounds that fill our daily lives.
World Listening Day 2016 includes a Soundwalk, Listening Session, Panel Discussion and Performance.
World Listening Day is co-organized by the World Listening Project (WLP) and the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE).
July 18 was chosen because it is the birthday of Canadian writer, educator, philosopher, visual artist, and composer R. Murray Schafer. His effort leading the World Soundscape Project and his seminal book, The Tuning of the World, inspired global interest in a new field of research and practice known as Acoustic Ecology.
